Nationals Beat Braves in Extras

The game lasted over five hours and the Braves fought hard all night, but the Washington Nationals came out on top 8-7 in fifteen innings on Saturday night.The Braves had nine hits in the game. Jason Heyward had a huge night, he hit a home run to lead off the game in the bottom of the first and then hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to send the game to extras. The two homers give him thirteen on the season now. Brian McCann led the Braves with three hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth which was his eighteenth of the year. Freddie Freeman added two hits, one was a solo shot in the eighth for his fifteenth homer of the year. Chris Johnson also added two hits in the heartbreaking loss.Mike Minor started the game and suffered through the shortest outing of his career. He pitched only an inning and two-thirds and gave up four runs on four hits and walked four batters. Anthony Varvaro pitched the next three and a third innings and gave up a run on five hits and struck out three. Luis Ayala pitched the sixth inning and gave up a run on three hits. Scott Downs then pitched a perfect seventh and struck out two batters. Jordan Walden then pitched the eighth inning and gave up a run on a solo homer to Ryan Zimmerman, which proved to be a big run for Washington. David Carpenter struck out the side in the ninth and then Craig Kimbrel made a perfect appearance pitching the tenth. Luis Avilan then pitched the next two innings and was perfect while striking out three batters over that span. Kris Medlen then pitched the next three innings and unfortunately suffered the loss in relief and his record falls to 10-11 on the year. He gave up a homer to former Brave Adam LaRoche in the top of the fifteenth that proved to be the winning run.Atlanta is now 75-48 on the year and they will finish their series with the Nationals tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Julio Teheran (9-6) will start the finale against Gio Gonzalez (7-5) for Washington. Also, the Braves announced they signed infielder Tyler Greene to a minor league deal. Greene, who is a career .224 hitter in the big leagues and has played with the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox, was signed for some depth at second base with Dan Uggla being out due to eye surgery and Tyler Pastornicky's injury.
